Red Hot!

Hamilton Beach 43253 Ensemble 12-Cup Red Coffeemaker

We had no need for a new coffee pot. The free one from Gevelia was working just fine. However, on a recent trip to K-mart we caught this one on sale for just under 40 bucks, and it's RED! We've slowly been building up a counter top of red kitchen appliances, so the coffee maker fits right in! Easy to clean! The mouth of the pitcher is as wide as the base, so it's easy to get your hand inside to clean it out unlike some. Few buttons, so it's easy to program too. Very light weight, so it's also easy to move the maker around if needed. No complaints about speed either. I never feel like I'm waiting on it to finish. One small complaint, but it's nothing major, there is no room for going over the 12 cup limit. It will overflow!

Some makers have a little room for you to overfill, but not this one! No biggie, just don't overfill! I also like the wide karaff on this one. A lot of pitchers have a weird karaff that always causes you to spill a few drops when pouring that first cup. Not this one! Clean up of the coffee ground chamber is easy too. I suggest investing in one of those permanent copper reusable filters. They work really well with this one. I have yet to end up with grounds in the coffee.

I was about a decade late on getting a machine that uses grounds. For many years I just drank only instant coffee. And occasionally Starbuck's coffee. So when I decided to stop blowing money at Starbucks I literally spent between 3 and 4 hours here at Amazon researching which was the best for under $75 (I have no life, I admit). This Hamilton Beach 43253 had the best consistent reviews, seemed easy to use and has a stylish design & color. I bought this a year ago and it still works great, makes a great cup of coffee and is easy to use, clean and maintain. I buy beans and grind em up. I'll never go back to instant; I'm spoiled now. If my machine eventually wears down or breaks I'll just order the same model. Only my dad and I use it. The 12-cup capacity makes 4-5 soup-size mugs of coffee.

The coffee stays hot for quite awhile after the hot plate turns off after 2 hours. You can always turn it back on if you want to keep the hot plate on. I don't remember if a water filter came with this but I read here that it's difficult to attach. So, like many here, I just left it off.

Great Coffee Maker - Great Coffee

This replaces my $99 KitchenAid Empire Red coffee maker and what an improvement! Half the price and the coffee tastes much better. (The red's about the same too so it matches my KitchenAid toaster.) My first KitchenAid croaked after 3 weeks (the electronics/clock failed) so they sent me a replacement that was forever leaking if the carafe wasn't positioned exactly right.

Then a couple weeks ago I started getting a lot of grounds in my coffee and coffee all over the counter so I checked Consumer Reports and the reviews out here and settled on the Hamilton Beach Ensemble. I kind of miss the KitchenAid's bright red digital display of the clock (this unit has black numbers on a gray background) but, other than that, it's easy to set the clock and the turn-on time, brew time is comparable, the auto shut-off feature is a must for me, and I can't get over how much better the coffee tastes.
