Unquestionably The Best Option

Chemex Coffee Makers

This is the best option for brewing coffee at home. Anyone that appreciates a fine coffee knows that a French press creates a full bodied coffee. Think of it as a first step to realizing that there is something better than an auto drip coffee maker. However, the french press also leaves behind undesirable oils from the coffee, a metallic taste from the plunger, and they are ridiculously difficult to clean. And the longer you leave the coffee in the press, the stronger it gets... Not a good thing... The chemex coffee maker on the other hand, has a thick filter that removes undesirable oils from the coffee and allows you to use a finer ground coffee for better extraction. And when you are finished, all you have to do is rinse it out with hot water. You do not have any off metallic flavors, you do not have the puny extraction of a an auto drip (not to mention the flavor of 20 meters of aluminum innards laden with lime build up). I would encourage anyone considering this coffee maker to try a cup of coffee from one, the difference is mind boggling.

Understand that I am a man of convenience and I drank instant coffee for years because I did not like the mess and inconvenience of an auto drip or french press. This coffee maker made a big impact in our daily routine. I have used many types of coffee makers over the years, and I keep coming back to Chemex type coffee makers. Some call it work, I call it the extra bit of user involvement that results in a higher quality end product. If you take coffee seriously--I assume you do if you reading this--the small amount of involvement required by this type of coffee brewer is simply the cost of perfection. Truly wonderful.

Unsurpassed Coffee

I have been using a Chemex 8-cup coffee maker for almost a year and have never had such good coffee before in my life. I am constantly looking forward to my next pot of coffee! There is a downside to this coffee maker: it is a more manual procedure than what you are used to, and it also takes a couple of pots to learn how to use this most efficiently. The first time I tried to use mine, I had ground my coffee way too finely and it just took forever! The big time consumers: you have to boil your water separately (you do have a water kettle right?) and then you have to gradually pour the boiled water through the Chemex. I use filtered water, freshly ground home roasted beans, and this Chemex to produce the finest coffee I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. And this coffee is a pleasure! In fact, I've totally given up using cream and sugar because my coffee no longer has anything to hide.

Another up side: clean up means swishing the Chemex with warm water and tossing the water down the drain. You can also wash with a bottle brush but this is rarely necessary. A brief swish is really all it takes to get your Chemex looking factory new. Try that with your electric drip machine! Ha! That thing will NEVER look brand new! Oh, here's a final upside: this Chemex brews the best coffee you'll ever drink, and it costs less than just about anything. You are probably already spending more money than this every month at Starbucks!Go ahead and buy yourself one of these. If necessary, wake up 10 minutes earlier to make your coffee. Better yet, wake up 20 minutes earlier. And when your coffee is ready, instead of dumping it into a travel cup and bolting out the door, sit down and enjoy your first cup for the next 10 minutes. You deserve it!

Minimalist Coffee At Its Best

I grew up in a series of funky houses whose kitchens were their worst feature. The only visible touch of civility in the kitchens were some quality cookware and the Chemex on the stove. Later, my wife got a Chemex for both use and decoration in our own series of unremarkable kitchens. Actually, we bought one Chemex after another. Despite using those heat ring things and being careful, the allure of functional minimalistic coffee pots decreased as the cracks grew. Buying new Chemex pots every few months was not our biggest expense, but they don't give these things away and it was annoying.

I got to think that in this age of advanced glass technology that it would be possible to make them so they would last forever. My take is that they are purposely made to have a limited life. I can't go along with that. I did give three stars for style, probably one too much. If I could be assured that the new Chemexes are made of durable glass, then I would assign all the stars and buy one. We really need one as our Melitta just developed its own little crack after about three years of use. Hmmm.
