Great, Fast Coffee Without The Volcano

BUNN BTX-B ThermoFresh 10-Cup Thermal-Carafe Home Coffee Brewer

This is without a doubt the best coffeemaker that I've ever owned. It has been about 3 months now, and I could not be more pleased. The very premise of a Bunn coffee brewer is different from the "volcano" models that erupt with loud roars and groans as they slowly belch hot water and steam over the grounds one teaspoon at a time. With Bunn, you get perfectly brewed coffee in a few minutes after a half-hour initial, one-time set-up. One thing to remember is to keep the carafe - and especially the black plastic parts - CLEAN. When I failed to do this, the carafe tended to dribble coffee down the front of the carafe. However, a weekly cleaning of the carafe mitigates this design issue.

You can clean by placing on the top rack of the dishwasher or with a little dishwashing liquid. Another post indicated that the carafe was redesigned (improved) in Feb of 2007, but I have no independent knowledge of that. You must also use BUNN filters, as I found out when using a store brand once, which caused a mess. Live and learn. Great tasting coffee is the result of near-boiling water being run over grounds in a systematic, controlled way. Bunn does this, and FAST! Would highly recommend.

A Good Cup Of Coffee...

Bunn Thermal Coffee Maker

We purchased this to replace an aging Mr. Coffee. The Mr. Coffee was programmable, which was nice when I remembered, but when I didn't it could take nearly 20 minutes to brew a pot. That is a long wait in the morning. We considered this or the Braun programmable, which appeared to be rated well, but I couldn't determine how long it took to brew. I knew I wanted speed .I got speed. This thing is fast. By two and a half minutes its down to waiting on the last drips to come out of the basket. The coffee's flavor is excellent, but a little weaker than I like. I upped the amount of coffee to the recommended tbsp per cup (which would yield very bitter coffee on other machines I've had) and its back to where I like it. A darker roasted coffee would also add a lot of strength. I enjoy the fact that the coffee doesn't sit on a burner and cook too.

The carafe has done a great job of keeping the coffee hot for hours at a time. I've had no real trouble about the carafe dripping.. this may be because the Mr. Coffee trained me to go slower to avoid such drips. Another point: I checked and the Bunn filters ARE taller than my others. The coffee grinds do get pretty high on the filter, so I can imagine that getting off-brand filters would get you grinds in your coffee. Just buy the Bunn filters at your local megamart. They're not that expensive. Also, decaf and/or finely ground coffee does sometimes overflow the filter anyway. The manual mentions this and offers a free replacement sprayhead to improve this. We don't drink a huge amount of decaf, so I don't think we'll ask for it. I've tried some premium coffees again, and am happy to report that they are worth it now. A good coffeemaker does make a difference in the quality of the coffee.

Best Coffee Maker I Ever Owned

This coffee maker is shockingly fast. 3 minutes is not a lie. It does consume about 40 watts of electricity 24x7 to keep the water hot. I have the carafe version and the coffee stays hot for about 8 hours. Ignore the comments about leaks, a little bit of olive oil under the spout will stop it dripping down, ditto the gasket. This is probably caused by having very hard water. The coffee it makes is just awesome because instead of the water just dripping thru for 10 minutes with your average home coffee maker, it moves through with force, the grinds are churning around in the basket exposing all the sides.

I use PEET's Coffee and you really do need the genuine braun filters. I get a #2 grind of French Roast and use 4 heaping tablespoons per pot. My friend is a die hard walk in coffee buyer from peets (15 years) and he says this is just as good as the stuff he gets except no paper cup. The only slight problem I have found is that it does need to be very level or the water will start dripping out before you're ready. Also read the instructions or you're going to make a mess the first time.
